I think mid colour tiles are best on the floor, and with colour variations/pattern within the tiles to hide dirt & marks. I have just finished a bathroom. It has white feature tiles on 1 wall, matt charcoal tiles on the other 3 walls, and a lightish floor tile - a matt concrete/aggregate look in a warm grey.
